The challenge.

The Athletes Village played an integral part in the Olympics legacy and required a large volume of doorsets to meet the large capacity the games required. In collaboration with Galliford Try Laidlaw supplied 33,000 performance doorsets suitable to high capacity living quarters.

The solutions.

Laidlaw has played a part in the Olympics legacy with over 33,000 doors from its Urban Edge range provided for the Athletes Village, now the East Village housing estate.

Initially close to 30,000 Urban Edge doorsets in a range of finishes including veneered, laminated and primed were supplied to 11 blocks within the Athletes Village – each of which holds around 300 apartments. Integral to the specification was the use of EnduraCor within the doorsets; the cost-effective engineered performance core is both versatile and stable, offering severe duty rating, up to 30RwdB sound reduction, plus a fire rating of up to 60 minutes. With sustainability a key theme of 2012, the long-lasting durability of EnduraCor was a key, as the specification looked beyond the initial remit, taking into account the longer-term needs of the development. Secured by Design doorsets were also supplied to the apartment entrances, for enhanced safety and security, both during the Games and going forward.

After the games closed in August 2012, Laidlaw have started the process of supplying a further 3,000 doorsets to the East Village development, the lasting legacy of the Athletes Village, which has been designed to provide essential new housing for East London. Urban Edge riser doors with glass vision panels were also supplied for the corridors of the blocks.

Paul Redman, Project Manager from Galliford Try said: "The Olympic Village housed 17,000 athletes and officials during the games meaning we needed to specify a high-quality product, as such, the durability of EnduraCor was suitable for the high capacity and communal areas to be able to cope with tough situations needed for a busy environment. An integral part to the successful delivery of the Olympic Village development is our good working relationship with Laidlaw."

Jason Miller, Site Services Manager from Laidlaw said: "We were delighted to have been involved in such a prestigious project that allowed Urban Edge to showcase its high-quality doorset solutions. Our capacity to deliver heavy use doorsets suitable for city living developments, such as the East Village, really showcases Urban Edge’s capabilities."

The East Village has been transformed into 2,818 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes and houses, creating an essential residential quarter. New parklands, open space, new transport links and community facilities will surround the new communities.
