The Green Apple Awards launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation look to recognise, reward, and promote environmental best practice around the world. A ceremony was held at The Houses of Parliament on Monday 12th November where businesses, governments and organisations from across the globe joined together to celebrate best practice. The award win highlights the hard work demonstrated by everyone at Laidlaw, as well as the continued commitment and investment in more sustainable and mindful practices.
Laidlaw has made significant changes across the group including the installation of waterless urinals in the men’s toilets, the introduction of energy-saving LED lights in the warehouse and establishing more sustainable printing practices. Employees have been encouraged to change their habits through in-house environmental training supported by waste provider Go 4 Greener. In addition, all employees have been gifted reusable water bottles to help reduce the need for single-use plastic.
As a result, Laidlaw has cut energy consumption by 26%, saving 24,000 KwH over the course of a year which is equivalent to 14.2 tonnes of carbon. The business expects further savings in the future as the full effects of current and planned initiatives produce more data. In addition, landfill waste has reduced by 100%, with all waste now recycled or repurposed.
Kevin Harrison, Health & Safety and Operations Manager at Laidlaw collected the award on behalf of the business and commented on the win: “To be selected for a silver Green Apple Award was indeed an honour and a testament to all of Laidlaw’s employees. From our CEO Steve Lee to our office staff and beyond, everyone has contributed in one form or another through time investment, training, and most importantly changing their habits for the better. We have always believed that we are at the forefront of environmental excellence in our market sector and this award backs up our beliefs and further supports our ISO14001 certification.”
