Europe’s biggest retail outlet, the recently opened £1.6 billion, 42-acre, 300-store Westfield-London Shopping Centre in saw several leading retailers use Laidlaw’s handrails and ironmongery systems. These included the prestigious Marks and Spencer, House of Fraser, Boots and FCUK outlets.

The Solution

The M&S design style required a greater sense of open space. Laidlaw Balustrades’ Square Top Handrails System with Structural Glass was therefore used around all escalator areas at the 103,000 square foot, 3-floor flagship store.

The variety of ironmongery systems used in different stores at Westfield White City bears testament to Laidlaw’s product diversity and choice of finishes. House of Fraser used the Orbis 600 range of pull and lever handles with door closers in polished aluminium while FCUK utilised the Orbis 800 range. The Orbis 800 stainless steel range was also used at the centre’s Northwest Bus Interchange.

How Laidlaw Helped

During the consultation for the ironmongery project, Laidlaw was able to give suggestions for their balustrade requirements. As a result, Laidlaw Balustrades’ 3kN system was developed specifically to meet the requirements of the project. It is a component-based system, manufactured to meet the heavier horizontal loading standards of BS 6180 for buildings where the general public potentially congregate in large numbers.

Westfield asked retailers to produce something special for the centre and this offered a great opportunity for us to trial a range of new design features. We have focused on helping our customers to shop easily in an environment which feels really special.
