Foundry Courtyard student accommodation is set on the east side of Glasgow, close to the University of Strathclyde, City of Glasgow College and Glasgow Caledonian University. The development consists of 536 bedrooms, split over two blocks, focused around a central courtyard with 149 self-contained studios and 387 bedrooms in cluster flats. The accommodation boasts high quality indoor and outdoor amenity spaces for students and a retail unit fronting Kennedy Street.

This was Balfour Beatty’s first project for the direct let market as a developer of student accommodation. Balfour Beatty commissioned Laidlaw to supply the access control solutions.

The Solution

Laidlaw supplied, programmed and commissioned 610 Salto XS4 handle sets across the two accommodation blocks. In addition, Laidlaw provided XS4 controllers and readers for online entrance doors.

The Salto system, like many of Laidlaw’s access control solutions, provides an audit trail of users, tracking access to each individual door, which adds an extra layer of security to the building.

How Laidlaw Helped

Laidlaw was present throughout the whole project, including the initial specification, scheduling, supplying the product, programming, commissioning, training and troubleshooting. Laidlaw’s experts were on hand from start to finish to ensure the project was completed on time.

Laidlaw’s high-level of involvement in the project added value in many ways. Laidlaw ensured that the various elements were supplied to site at the point that they were required by installers, saving the client time and storage space whilst also ensuring smooth completion of the project by scheduling alongside installers. In addition, Laidlaw were on site to aide the installers, helping with any queries that arose during the installation. Laidlaw spent time training the client, making sure that they had adequate knowledge to manage the system once live.
